The Church of Our Lady Of Velankanny is a Passionist Parish belonging to the diocese of Kottapuram, Kerala. It is situated at the shore of Arabian Sea, having 430 families, comprising of Fishermen Community. The local people are mainly fishermen. The Passionist took over this poor parish in 1993 and the people are very loving, kind and deeply rooted in their faith. The Parish has 18 basic Christian communities, once in a month Scripture reading, faith sharing and discussion on social and community issues are conducted in every Christian community. The Parish has Eucharist celebration every day and on Sundays too. The Parish has Sunday Catechism for children and various seminars are conducted for their spiritual welfare.
The Parish has various social projects. It has a small clinic run by the Visitation Sisters Community which serves the poor, sick and meets emergency medical needs of the old and abandoned people of the society.
The Parish has pious associations like Holy Childhood, Vincent de Paul society, Kerala Catholic Youth Movement, which are actively involved in the progress of the Parish and society at large through prayers and social work. The feast of patroness of the parish Our Lady of Velankanny is celebrated every year on the 8th of September on the birthday of our Lady. The celebration goes on for 5 days. Annual retreat for the parishioners is conducted during the Lenten season every year. The Parish has two substations under the patronage of St. Sebastian and annual feast is celebrated in the month of January.
The Passionist Parish community consists of two priests. Fr. Antony Xavier Tharayil C.P. is the Pastor and Superior of the community, Fr. Francis C.P. and Fr. Junesh CP are the associate Pastors. All are very actively involved in the Parish ministry and promoting the charisma through Parish ministry and outside ministries.
